Kendal Museum:-

Timeline:-

1796 - The Kendal museum was formed in 1796 by William Todhunter who exhibited fossils, plants, minerals, animals and antiques. 

1835 - the Kendal Literary and Scientific Society took over the museum.

1900 - In the early 1900s the museum started to have money problems.

1913 - the current building was offered to the Town Council for the purposes of housing the museum.

1920 - After World War One the collections were moved to the new building and the museum was run by a series of honorary curators on behalf of the Town Council. One of these curators included Alfred Wainwright, who gave up his spare time for 30 years to look after the collections.

 

Opening Times

Thursdays and Fridays from 12.00 noon to 5pm
Saturdays from 10.30am to 5.30pm. Closed for Christmas.

Directions

By road from M6 Motorway
From the M6, Junction 36: Take the A591 to Kendal, leave at the exit signposted South Kendal. Follow signs for town centre, then for Brough (A685). After crossing the river, Kendal Museum is on the right - the car park is signposted.

By road from Windermere/Keswick A591
Take the A5284 towards Kendal town centre, then follow signs for Brough (A685). After crossing the river, Kendal Museum is on the right - the car park is signposted.

By Train
The nearest mainline station is Oxenholme the Lake District. Kendal Station is situated on the opposite side of the road From Kendal Museum.

Parking

FREE car and coach parking is available for museum visitors.
